Optimizing AR Workflows for Field Sales

Refactoring a prototype into a native iOS experience for visual merchandising in retail spaces.

Context
  • From "Demo" to "Tool"
    Augmented Reality (AR) often looks good in demos but fails in the field. Field agents worked under strict time limits in busy, noisy environments. They needed a tool to visualize product placement instantly, without fighting a complex interface.
    1. Usability friction: The original prototype used non-standard navigation, forcing users to "re-learn" how to use an iPad.
    2. Visual noise: Cluttered layouts distracted from the primary task: placing the product in the real world.
    3. Time pressure: The redesign was part of a strategic pitch. Speed and polish were non-negotiable.
  • My role
    I acted as a Design Consultant. My task was to audit the existing prototype, align it with native iOS standards, and deliver a production-ready concept to support the client pitch—all within 96 hours.
Approach
  • Phase 1: Native alignment (iOS HIG)
  • Goal: Reduce the learning curve to zero.
  • Investigation: The original design used custom navigation patterns that felt foreign on an iPad.
  • Decision: I enforced strict adherence to Apple’s HIG, replacing fragile custom UI elements with standardized native patterns:
    • Navigation: Implemented a standard Top Navigation Bar and Global Search.
    • Familiarity: By aligning with the OS, I ensured that any user familiar with an iPhone could use this app instinctively, eliminating the need for training.
Phase 2: Information architecture & scanning
  • Goal: Speed up item selection in the field.
  • Decision: I restructured the Listing Page for rapid visual scanning.
    • Visual Hierarchy: Category cards were established as visual anchors.
    • Noise Reduction: I eliminated decorative backgrounds. A single Accent Color was reserved exclusively for primary actions ("Add to AR"), guiding the eye instantly to the next step.
Phase 3: Progressive disclosure (PDP)
Goal: Prevent information overload on the Product Detail Page.

Decision: I implemented a Progressive Disclosure strategy.
  • Focus: The "Add to AR" button is always visible.
  • Details: Technical specs are hidden by default. This prevented cognitive overload by keeping the interface clean for the primary workflow while keeping data accessible on demand.
The iPad-first architecture adapts seamlessly to mobile contexts. By using standard iOS constraints, the layout maintains hierarchy and feature parity across devices with minimal development effort.
Impact

Usability gains: The streamlined navigation significantly reduced the friction of item selection, speeding up the core field workflow.

Fixing taxonomy (collections vs. lists)
While mapping the user flow, I identified a semantic ambiguity. The team used "Collections" for both manufacturer sets and user groups, confusing everyone.

The fix:
I advocated for and standardized the term "Custom Lists" for user content.
This simple taxonomy change clarified the distinction between "Official" and "Personal" content, improving both the onboarding experience and internal developer documentation.
